Bangladesh earthquake kills ten people, injures hundreds
In Dhaka, three people died when a railing collapsed at a five-story building in the Bangshal neighborhood, and another person was killed in Mughdha as a building collapsed. At least 14 buildings were affected in Dhaka, while over 250 workers were injured in a panic at a garment factory hub in Gazipur district. A child was also killed in Narayanganj, where 24 others sustained injuries.
The quake struck at 10:38 a.m. local time (0438 GMT), centered about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of Dhaka in Narsingdi district, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. The tremor lasted only a few seconds, causing widespread panic as residents rushed outdoors.
The government is actively monitoring the situation and assessing damage, with the local fire department reporting seven buildings affected in and around Dhaka. The earthquake was also felt in parts of neighboring India.
Interim head Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow over the casualties and emphasized efforts to document the full extent of the damage.
