Moderate Earthquake Jolts Bangladesh
Authorities reported that a minimum of five individuals, including a young child, lost their lives, while about 100 others sustained injuries across different regions of the nation.
Those affected included students from Dhaka University and factory laborers in the central districts of Gazipur and Narsingdi, the latter being identified as the quake’s epicenter, as stated by the office of interim leader Muhammad Yunus.
In Dhaka’s Bangshal area, a railing from a five-story structure collapsed, causing three fatalities, local police officer Ashish Bose told a news agency, noting the severity of the incident.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department indicated that the shaking occurred at 10:38 a.m. local time (0438GMT), with its epicenter located in the Narsingdi district, roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) to the northeast of Dhaka.
Although the tremor endured only a few moments, residents throughout Dhaka evacuated apartments and houses as the ground vibrated, seeking refuge outdoors to ensure their safety.
Officials added that the earthquake generated casualties in multiple districts, leading to structural failures — including house collapses — and a series of related mishaps.
