Quake in Bangladesh Leaves Multiple Dead
In the central district of Narsingdi, which served as the quake’s epicenter, five fatalities were reported, and more than a hundred residents sustained injuries, the district magistrate and deputy commissioner, Mohammad Anwar Hossain, informed a news agency.
In Dhaka’s Bangshal area, the railing of a five-story structure gave way, leading to three deaths. Another life was lost in the Mughdha neighborhood when a building collapsed, according to a statement issued by the office of interim head Muhammad Yunus.
Authorities indicated that at least 14 buildings in Dhaka were impacted by the seismic jolt. Additionally, in the garment-manufacturing hub of central Gazipur, more than 250 workers were hurt as panic spread and people rushed to find safety.
A child also died in the central district of Narayanganj, while 24 others were injured, the statement noted.
The tremor, registered at 10:38 a.m. local time (0438GMT), originated in Narsingdi district, roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of Dhaka, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Though the quake lasted only a few seconds, it sent residents of Dhaka running from their residences and workplaces, seeking refuge in open areas as the ground violently shook.
